How To Inspect A Slate Roof

by Vanessa Lord

Slate roofs last a long time, but in order to get the most bang for your buck, you need to inspect your roof properly, and make repairs as necessary. The most important part about inspecting a slate roof is that you check it frequently. At the very least you should check on your roof in the fall so that any repairs needed can be made before the winter and in the spring to look for any damage caused by harsh winter weather. Fortunately, slate roofs are easy to inspect, and most slate roof repairs can be completed quickly.

Check the Slates

To inspect your the slate on your roof, walk the length and width of the roof looking for any chipped, broken, or missing slates. While chipped slates won't cause serious problems, badly damaged or missing slates need to be replaced immediately to avoid leaks. If you find broken or chip slates, an experienced slate repair company can repair slates individually to save money.

Check the Flashing

In order to know what you need to do to maintain the flashing on your roof, you need to know what type of flashing is installed. If you have copper flashing, you're in luck, because it's relatively maintenance-free. You will notice that your copper flashing will patina naturally over the years, so you can expect it to turn green or brown. If you have galvanized flashings, you need to check the flashing for chipped paint or rust. It's important to paint galvanized flashing yearly to keep it from rusting. If the flashing has rust spots, they need to be repaired to avoid leaks.

Chimneys and Gutters

While you're inspecting your slate roof, you should also inspect your chimney and/or gutters. To inspect your chimney:

  • Make sure the flashing around your chimney is in good condition.
  • Check the bricks and joints for missing mortar.
  • Check to make sure the chimney is properly lined if it's used with your furnace to prevent leaks.

To inspect your gutters:

  • Make sure the gutters are free of any holes.
  • Ensure the solder seams are still intact.
  • Run water into the gutters and down the drain pipes looking for any leaks that may need to be repaired.

Overall inspecting a slate roof isn't difficult. However, if you want your roof to last a long time, and you want to avoid water leaking into your home, you need to have any repairs needed completed as quickly as possible. Just make sure you call a slate roof repair company like Karbella Construction to ensure that the repairs are done correctly for a reasonable price.
