How To Get Bats Out Of Your Barrel Tile Roof

by Vanessa Lord

If you have a barrel tile roof, you are at a greater risk of having a bat infestation in your roof. Bats can fit in very small spaces and they like to look for dark and high areas to hide. Your barrel roof has many ridges that give it a great look, but those ridges also create the perfect hiding spot for bats. If there are tears in the paper under the tiles, they can also go right into your attic. Since the guano of bats contains a fungus that's not healthy to humans, you will want to eradicate bats in your roof as quickly as possible by following the advice in this article.

How to recognize a bat infestation

If you fear you may have bats in your barrel tile roof, you want to look for bats flying around your house in the evening hours. Make note of the areas you see them flying the most and check the sides of your house for bat guano. Bat guano closely resembles mouse feces. If you find guano on your house, the bats are more than likely taking up residence in the roof directly above the droppings.

Removing the bats

One way to get the bats out from under your roof is to wait until evening when they exit and throw fine mesh netting over the roof. This netting will keep them from being able to get back in the tiles. The netting isn't attractive, but you'll want to keep it in place until you are able to permanently seal the tiles.

You can also use an exclusion device from a pest control supply store to get the bats out of your roof.  This device is designed in a way that allows the bats to exit the tiles, but it won't let them re-enter. Put the device in the tiles where you feel the bats are residing and leave it for a couple of days. They may be in many tiles, so you can purchase a few devices and seal up a few tiles at a time.

Bats do migrate, so if you feel the job is too much then you may want to simply wait for them to migrate for the winter. Once you feel all the bats are out, you want to make sure to seal all possible entry ways completely.

Sealing the roof

To seal the roof, you'll install a breathable piece of steel material around the entire opening of each tile. This can be a very time consuming job and must be done correctly. You need to make sure there are no gaps, but the roof must still be able to drain properly. Therefore, you should consider hiring a professional roofing company to do the job.

If you see any other cracks or gaps the bats may be getting into, you can seal them with a tube of roof sealant. Pay attention to areas around the chimney and flashing, these can be weak spots where bats are often found entering.

If you want the job done without the hassle of doing it yourself, you can call a roofer to come investigate and take care of the entire issue for you.
