3 Signs You Need Gutter Repair

by Vanessa Lord

Your gutters experience a massive amount of stress and wear with every storm, as they have to properly drain water from your entire roof safely away from the sides of your home. A gutter system that is not working properly can lead to interior water damage, which can be expensive and complicated to fix. Understanding some of the clearest signs that your gutters are no longer working as intended can make it easier for you to identify when you should talk to a roofing contractor about repairing or replacing specific sections of your gutter system.

1. Sagging

A clear sign that your gutters have experienced too much wear and tear is if you see them literally moving away from the sides of your roof. This can happen because of rust eating away the support brackets, pests and animals running through the gutters, or simple clogs that have enough weight to pull the gutters down and away. In any case, the gap that opens up allows water to run down your siding and drain too close to the sides of your home, where it can cause foundation damage, so you'll need to address those sections right away.

2. Standing Water

If, when you are working on your roof or cleaning out your gutters, you notice any water that is simply standing stagnant in your gutters, you likely require gutter repair. This is a normal thing that can happen over time as gutters wear down and shift within their support brackets, creating a slope that does not properly run to the downspout. This can leave water sitting idly in your gutters, where it can prove to be a breeding ground for pests like mosquitoes and can contribute to rust and corrosion – which can complicate the problem and cause leaks.

3. Siding Fading and Soil Erosion

Unlike the above two warning signs, which deal specifically with the gutters, you should also keep an eye on your siding and the soil right below your gutters. Water that overflows from your gutters, either because of a leak, a clog, or some other structural issue, will run down the sides of your home. This can cause rapid fading of the color of your siding and can also cause soil erosion around the perimeter of your home. Water that runs down the exterior walls of your home is much more likely to find a way into the interior of your house behind the drywall, so you should have your local professional roofing services inspect your gutters as soon as possible.
