How To Protect Your Roof From A Stormy Climate

by Vanessa Lord

Wind and water are two of the biggest hazards your roof will have to face, and a stormy climate will mean plenty of both. Roofs in stormy climates must meet very high requirements since there's always a risk that the next storm will rip it off your house.

Many homeowners will try and find the best roofing systems to survive these conditions. However, there is plenty more that you can do to protect your roof if you live in a climate that's prone to storms.

Keep Your Gutters Clean

This is one of the most common tasks associated with roof maintenance, but when your house is in a stormy climate this is something you can't postpone. The gutters provide the water with a means of draining off the roof and into the right channels. If the gutters are blocked by leaves and other debris, the water in your roof could drain more slowly. If water is allowed to accumulate on the roof, it's weight could severely compromise the roof structure.

Watch Out for Weak Branches

One of the reasons why winds are hazardous for roofs is that a strong wind can easily break a branch and send it through the roof. While getting a stronger roof is one of the solutions you can explore, a different approach is to inspect nearby trees. If you find any branches that feel a bit weak, remove these before the next storm to lower the risk to your roof.

Fix Loose Shingles

Loose shingles can be ripped off your roof quite easily by a strong wind. However, since the shingles are interlocked, this also means that a single loose shingle could result in a whole section of your roof getting blown out. Call your local roofers to inspect your roof for loose shingles, especially after storms, and ensure these are nailed down before the next storm hits.

Check for Damage Around Roof Equipment

One of the reasons why roofs aren't as secure as they should be is the presence of equipment such as AC units, skylights, chimneys, etc. All these installations on the roof create weak points where they meet the roof. Therefore, if you have anything installed on your roof, regularly check the area around them for cracks and anything else that could compromise the roof.

Stay on Top of Maintenance

Don't wait until a storm hits to check on your roof. Create a schedule to ensure your roof gets the attention it needs early.
